Criminal Law is often introduced to students as a dense and intimidating subject—laden with technical language, abstract principles, and judicial doctrines that appear far removed from real-life situations. For criminology students, however, Criminal Law should never be purely theoretical. It is the legal backbone of law enforcement, criminal investigation, prosecution, and ultimately, the administration of justice. This book, Criminal Law Book 1 (Articles 1–113 of the Revised Penal Code), was written with that reality in mind. The primary purpose of this work is to present the General Principles of Criminal Law in a clear, structured, and practical manner, without sacrificing doctrinal accuracy. It is intended primarily for criminology students, while remaining a useful reference for law students, law enforcers, and beginning legal practitioners who require a solid and reliable foundation in Criminal Law. Each topic is discussed in a straightforward manner, with emphasis on the essential elements of crimes and criminal liability, the proper appreciation of intent, negligence, and participation, and the practical application of legal principles in real-world settings, including police operations and criminal investigations. Jurisprudence is cited to clarify rules and reinforce understanding, not to overwhelm the reader. This book does not aim to replace the classic commentaries on the Revised Penal Code. Rather, it seeks to bridge the gap between theory and practice, enabling students to understand not only what the law provides, but how and why it applies. It is my hope that this work will assist students in developing a disciplined legal mindset, grounded in law and logic, and guided by respect for individual rights, due process, and the rule of law. I extend my sincere gratitude to my family, my friends, and my colleagues for their unwavering support and encouragement, and to a special someone, unnamed but deeply appreciated, whose presence made this work possible.
